The African Legal Awards set out to recognise exceptional achievement from within Africa’s legal community at a time when the legal sector is going through a period of rapid change.

As African economies grow and diversify, local and international lawyers are presented with both opportunities and challenges as they seek to underpin this expansion with sound legal advice.

Hosted by Legal Week (organisers of The British Legal Awards) and the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa (CCASA), The African Legal Awards will bring the region's legal community together for a glittering awards ceremony on Friday 7 September 2018 at The Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Key awards include International Law Firm of the Year, African Law Firm of the Year (Large and Small Practice), General Counsel of the Year and Legal Department of the Year (Large Team and Small Team). The practice area awards cover: M&A; banking, finance and restructuring; competition and regulation; employment; IP; litigation and dispute resolution; environmental, energy and natural resources; TMT; transportation and infrastructure; and property and construction. This year a new category has been introduced - Best Use of Technology - open to law firms, in-house teams or legal departments, and networks/alliances.

The evening will culminate in the announcement of the winner of the Achievement Award, which is chosen by the CCASA and last year there was a standing ovation for Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who was presented with the award. Among the major winners in 2017 were Baker McKenzie, which was named International Law Firm of the Year; Kenya-based Anjarwalla & Khanna, winner of African Law Firm of the Year (Large Practice); and South African legal insurance provider Law For All, which secured Legal Department of the Year (Large Team).
